Formality and Academic convention in English

The programme identifies and teaches the formal language and discourse patterns of university English. It is designed to help those who have learnt English to Upper Intermediate or above but now need to professionalise their language for the academic workplace. All four skills –Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening are practiced using authentic materials from the university’s resources.British and US variants are used. 1 – 6 weeks

Advanced and complex language

This programme introduces competent users of English to the more advanced and complex grammar, register and vocabulary at advanced level. 1 – 6 weeks

Writing reports and evaluations in English

The programme identifies and teaches the key conventions of these specific written styles, and examines the key aspects of successful reports in evaluations in English. 1 – 6 weeks

Prosodic features

Prosodic features are units larger than sounds.The course is an intensive training in the rhythmic and intonational elements of speech (melodies, relative intensity of pronunciation of words and their parts, correlation of speech segments according to length, overall speech tempo, pauses, and general timbre coloration) which will enable the participant to produce an appropriate English or UK accent. 1 – 3 weeks (in combination with other programmes)

Pronunciation and recognising accents accent

This course teaches the sounds, intonation and rhythm and stress of English language (either US, or UK variants) for intermediate students, or those who learnt English in their home country and who need to improve their production or comprehension of English language. 1 – 3 weeks (in combination with other programmes)

Subject specific language and vocabulary

An accelerated skills programme to develop and improve the ability of academics to function in their subject in English. The course covers reading, writing and listening and speaking and is designed for academics with lower intermediate level of English. 1 – 3 weeks (in combination with other programmes)

Advanced language practice

An accelerated skills programme to develop and improve the language competency of academics in their subject in English. The course covers reading, writing and listening and speaking and is designed for users of English at Intermediate level. 1 – 6 weeks

Advanced speaking and listening

An accelerated skills programme to develop and improve the speaking and listening competency of academics who deal with native English speakers socially and professionally The course is ideal for users of English at Intermediate level who may not have previously travelled or worked internationally. 1 – 6 weeks

Successful bidding and Proposal Development for researchers

This programme is designed to assist universities which are responding to increased completion for funding and demand for consortium bids in English. It gives participants the language skills to demonstrate the strategic value of your institution and to develop skills in presenting cases persuasively in clear, competent English. 1 – 6 weeks
